TAMPA – Revised computer models puts a tropical system, currently east of the Leeward Islands, in our general vicinity sometime this weekend. The tropical wave is expected to strengthen into a tropical depression or storm in the near future.

In a statement, the National Weather Service in Tampa said, “Forecast models continue the trend of strengthening the Bermuda High which puts the forecast track near south Florida on Saturday.”

Right now there is a high – 90 percent chance – that the tropical wave will develop into a named storm within the next 48 hours, possibly even later today. A hurricane hunter aircraft will investigate this afternoon.

While the system did not have a closed center of circulation, an earlier reconnaisance flight found it did have winds near tropical storm strength. It is moving to the west-northwest at about 15 mph.

It it does become a storm, it will be named Emily

TAMPA – National Hurricane Center forecasters say a large low pressure system in the tropical Atlantic could develop into the season’s fifth named storm before the day is over.

The tropical wave is far away from the Tampa Bay area – about 350 miles east of Martinique – and many computer models have it eventually curving away from the U.S.

The system has a high chance – around 90 percent – of developing into a tropical cyclone. It does become a storm, it would be named Emily.

Right now, the system is moving toward the west-northwest at about 15 mph.

A hurricane hunter aircraft was dispatched Monday morning to investigate.
